Beijing approached for Padma bridge funding

BANGLADESH has approached China for financing of the Padma Bridge but the latter has suggested settling first the issue regarding the existing contract with the World Bank, The Daily Star reports.

Finance minister AMA Muhith made the proposal to China when Li Jun, new Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, met him at his Secretariat office Wednesday.

After the meeting, the finance minister told newsmen that Bangladesh has made six proposals, including one on financing of the Padma Bridge project, to China.

Talking on the contract with the WB, he said: “We have been continuing talks with the World Bank regarding the Padma Bridge project and the proposal is now been lying with the WB president.”

It is not possible to say at this point whether the outcome will be positive or negative, he informed.

If the WB finally does not finance the project, the government wants to enter into a new agreement so that the project can be started by next dry season.

Muhith said, “In such a scenario, we are considering different alternative sources including Malaysia, China, ADB (Asian Development Bank), Jica and IDB (Islamic Develop Bank).”
