LAW enforcers and activists of ruling Awami League and its front organisations attacked the opposition men triggering sporadic clashes at different city points when the latter were on their way to mass rally on Monday.
Several people were injured in the clashes. Sounds of two gunshots were heard and three cocktails were exploded during the chaos, reports our correspondents covering the incidents.
The BNP is scheduled to hold a grand rally at Paltan this afternoon to mount pressure on the government to restore the caretaker government system for the next parliamentary election.
The procession was heading towards the mass rally venue.
Near Bata intersection of Elephant Road, another clash took place between police and Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP, when law enforcers barred a procession at noon.
At first a chase and counter-chase took place between them when Jubo Dal activists tried to go on with the procession defying police resistance.
Opposing the resistance, the Jubo Dal activists vandalised a number of light posts on the road and hurled brick chips on the law enforcers.
A chase and counter-chase between the BCL and JCD activists took place at Science Laboratory intersection.
The incident started around 12:15pm when the BCL activists quipped with bamboo sticks resisted a procession of the JCD men.
Our correspondent reported from Segunbagicha that a number of activists of Jubo Dal Kamrangirchar unit took position in the area with sticks, apprehending attack by the ruling party activists.
More Jubo Dal workers are expected to join them soon, the party men said.
Earlier, a group of BCL activists chased the Jubo Dal workers near Engineers Institute, Bangladesh.
In another incident, BCL resisted a procession of around 150 JCD and Jubo Dal activists in front of Matsya Bhaban.
The law enforcers were within yards when the BCL intercepted the procession. Sounds of two gunshots were heard during the chaos.
