Khalaf al Ali, 45, a Saudi citizen, was shot once in the left chest, Nurul Alam, assistant commissioner (Patrol) of Gulshan Division, told The Daily Star. He flew in to join the Saudi Embassy about two years ago, he added.
The Saudi Embassy said some unknown people attacked the official while a guard of his house said he saw a white private car leaving the place a very high speed after the gunshot.
“One of our diplomatic staff was killed near his house in Gulshan this morning. This is sad,” UNB quoted Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah Al Bussairy as saying.
Acting Foreign Secretary Mustafa Kamal however said Khalaf al Ali was on the non-diplomats’ list of the foreign ministry.
al Ali used to live alone at House 22/A on Road No. 120 in Gulshan over the past two years.
Visiting the crime scene, our correspondent reported that security guards of houses 19/A and 20/A heard a gunshot sometime around 1:15am and rushed out to see the Saudi official lying on the road in front of House 19/A.
“We immediately rang siren from our house,” Julfikar Ali, a guard of the house, told The Daily Star.
Hearing the siren, a patrol team of police rushed there. When they took the body to United Hospital, doctors there declared him dead.
Police could not ascertain the reason behind the killing immediately.
Talking to The Daily Star, Taposh Rema, a guard of the Saudi official’s house, said al Ali usually go out to roam in the city on bicycle.
“As his bicycle needed repair, he went out on foot last night,” Rema said.
The Saudi Embassy sent a note verbal (official communication) later in which it requested the foreign ministry and concerned authorities to investigate into the murder, said a foreign ministry source.
Some unidentified persons attacked on one of the diplomat of the embassy near his residence on Road 120 at Gulshan-2, said the note verbal.
Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin, Chief of Protocol of the foreign ministry Brigadier General MAS Sadeque and Director General Allama Siddiki visited United Hospital where al Ali’s body was kept.
Officials concerned had talked with the Saudi ambassador and expressed sympathy over the death, said some officials.
The government of Bangladesh will conduct an all-out inquiry into the killing and ensure exemplary punishment to the persons involved, the Saudi Ambassador was told.
Acting foreign secretary Mustafa Kamal termed the news of the murder as “very shocking”.
