TWO Islami Chhatra Shibir men were killed and “many” wounded during clashes between Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on the Chittagong University campus Wednesday.

Armed activists of Shibir and BCL were seen patrolling the campus around 5:00pm Wednesday. Most of the students of the university have already left the campus fearing the situation might worsen.

The university authorities shut down all academic activists till February 16. The CU authorities asked the male students to vacate their dormitories by 7:00pm on Wednesday and female students by 11:00am on Thursday.

Prof Anwarul Azim Arif, vice chancellor of the university, announced the decision around 5:00pm after an emergency meeting of the varsity authorities. He has convened an emergency meeting of the university syndicate at 8:30 Wednesday night to discuss the situation.

Deceased Masud bin Habib, a student of English, was the general secretary of Suhrawardy Hall unit of Shibir while Mujahidul Islam, a Zoology student, was an activist, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

Shibir is the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh while BCL of ruling Awami League.

Witnesses said the clash ensued around the noon as a BCL activist engaged in arguments with an ICS activist at the Arts Building of the university.

As the arguments continued, workers of both the student organisations, equipped with sticks and lethal weapons, locked in clash.

Proctor Dr Mohammad Nasim Hasan, who went there to quell the clashing students, was hit by a piece of brick in the face.

Many students, mostly belonging to the clashing groups, were injured, our correspondent reported. He however could not to ascertain immediately the number or identities of all the wounded.

Thirteen leaders and activists of BCL and Shibir were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with injuries.

According to campus sources, Wednesday’ brawl was a sequel to “heated arguments” between the two students on Tuesday over a “personal issue”.
