AT school just weeks before, the girl had approached a teacher about her plight after overhearing her parents’ plans being discussed behind her back in the family home, David Barrett reports in Telegraph.
The teacher was initially disbelieving, unable to consider that parents would marry off such a young child.
But the teacher did not dismiss the girl’s claims out of hand, and spoke to a specialist child protection teacher who then contacted the Forced Marriage Unit and the charity Karma Nirvana for advice.
“She was rescued from the family car on the way to the airport, just before she was due to fly to Bangladesh,” said Shazia Qayum, a youth project worker with the charity.
The case, which took place in the east Midlands at the beginning of last year, led to the girl being taken into foster care.
