>DOCTORS at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) yesterday separated Bonya and Barsha, conjoined twins aged four months and 12 days, in a seven-hour long surgical operation at the BSMMU Hospital. (Full article)
The babies regained consciousness soon after the surgery but Barsha has been given ventilation support, said BSMMU’s Paediatric Surgery Department Chairman Shafiqul Haque.
The twins were conjoined at their livers, intestines and gallbladders, chest bones and abdomen, Dr Shafiq said.
He said although it is hard to say anything about the babies before 72 hours, their condition was fine as of 9:00pm yesterday.
Dr Shafiq said six teams comprising 68 members, including over 40 doctors–plastic, liver and vascular surgeons–and two anaesthesia teams, took part in the surgery, which was projected live through multimedia for doctors, surgeons and others outside the operation theatre.
He told The Daily Star that the surgeons found the conjoined state of the twins more critical during the operation than what they had found during medical check-ups.
“The surgery was very critical…If the babies survive, this would be a milestone in the medical history of Bangladesh,” he said.
