>India allows 4.5 lakh ton rice export to Bangladesh

>DESPITE ban on export of any rice priced below $500 a ton, India allowed export of 4,50,000 tons of non-basmati rice to Bangladesh, Reuters reports quoting a statement by the director general of foreign trade.
The notification, issued Tuesday, said state-run companies State Trading Corporation, MMTC Ltd, PEC Ltd, and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd will export 1 lakh ton each.
The West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corporation Ltd will export 50,000 tons.
The notification did not give any reason for allowing the exports, despite a ban.
Bangladesh had urged the international community to provide rice to feed its population who were badly hit by two back to back flooding and a devastating cyclone, Cyclone Sidr.
Bangladesh needs nearly 2 million tonnes of food grains including rice by the end of June, following a devastating cyclone in November that killed 3,300 people and left millions homeless.
